Auf Geldscheinen findet man manchmal kleine, oft aquarellartig verlaufene, Markierungen, Zeichen oder Buchstaben. Manchmal erkennt man Typen, Initialen oder symbolische Formen, oft Kreise und manchmal auch ohne verständliche Gestalt. Meist sind nur Reste von Wörtern oder verwischte Spuren geblieben, es gibt aber auch vollständige ganze Imprints. Die Mutmaßungen sind verschwörerisch zahlreich, ein schrilles Thema ohne genaue Belege. Händler von Münzen und Noten sehen diese Scheine auf Messen, wo meist hohe Geldbeträge als Bargeld unterwegs sind. Aber die Erklärung ist recht einfach: beim Zählen von Scheinen und der Kontrolle auf Echtheit stempeln manche Profis in Wechselstuben oder Banken Prüfzeichen auf das halbwegs fälschungssichere Papier. Die Stempel scheinen auch den Besitz zu markieren, falls etwas geklaut wird. Oft betrifft es die 500er-Scheine, die jetzt langsam vom Geldmarkt genommen werden und verschwinden werden. Manchmal wird direkt auf den Schein gestempelt, auch auf die Banderole, mit denen ganze Bündel zusammengebunden sind; dann gerät manchmal ein Rest auf den Geldschein und bleibt dort. Sammler finden dies spannend, Verschwörungsdenker sehen geheime Botschaften, die es aber nicht gibt. Ganze Stempel findet man an der gleichen Stelle, die Position meist rechts, dort wo kein Hologramm ist und der Zahlenwert fett ist. Zwei verschiedene Stempel auf einem Schein dagegen sind extrem rar. Vermutlich werden die Noten überwiegend jeweils einzeln betrachtet und gestempelt und markiert.
Maks Dannecker findet und fotografiert prüfend solche besonderen Banknoten. Obschon Goldstücke offenbar größere mythische Faszination zu haben scheinen, entwickeln auch solche Spuren eine Wertigkeit, gerade auch in der Benutzung. Schärfe und Unschärfe, Reste von Farbe und abgebrochene Details. Durch Fokus und vergrößernde Ausschnitte entstehen künstlerische Arbeiten. Auch hier Kontrolle und Auszählen, neu entstehende Räume und Farbbilder, digitale Aquarelle. Die künstlerischen Lesbarmachungen spiegeln Kontrollmechanismen und neokapitalistische Prozesse. Abzählen und Abbilden, Notationen und verwobene Formen. Als Matrix ergibt sich so jeweils eine Hervorhebung: ein Atlas der Geldnoten. Gestempelte Scheine, künstlerisch untersucht und fotografisch als Bilder übersetzt, wie ein Nachhall der Finanzbewegungen, ironischerweise durch mechanische Handstempel und das immergleiche Zusammenzählen symbolisiert. Die Arbeiten von Maks Dannecker gleichen einer Echtheitsprüfung der nur scheinbar kryptischen Bearbeitungen. Die Fotokünstlerin scannt die Archive der Wirklichkeit wie Tresore voller Papiergold, die räumlichen Konfigurationen unserer Alltagswelt mit Bedacht. Die Eingriffe in die fotografischen Abbilder der Banknoten schaffen neue virtuelle Raumwelten konkreter Kunst.

“Note stamps”: Sometimes, on bills, one finds small markings, characters or letters, often smudged like watercolour paints. Sometimes, one recognizes types, initials or symbolic forms, often circles and occasionally, too, markings of no comprehensible design. Usually, only scraps of words or blurred traces remain, but there are complete, whole imprints as well. Conjectures are conspiratorially numerous, a brash theme with no precise proofs. Dealers of coins and notes see these bills at trade shows, where generally high sums of money circulate in cash form. The explanation is really simple, though: when counting notes and checking for authenticity, some professionals in exchange offices or banks stamp certification marks onto the reasonably forgery-proof paper. The stamps also seem to mark possession, in case something gets stolen. This often concerns the 500 notes that are now being gradually removed from the money market and are going to disappear. Sometimes the stamp is put directly on the note, and on the paper strip that holds entire bundles together too; when that happens, residue sometimes gets on the note and stays there. Collectors find this fascinating; conspiracy theorists see non-existent secret messages. One finds whole stamps in the same place, usually positioned on the right where there is no hologram and the numerical value is printed in bold. Two different stamps on one note, by contrast, are extremely rare. Presumably, in most cases, each note is examined individually and stamped and marked.
Maks Dannecker finds special banknotes like these and photographs them searchingly. Although gold coins evidently seem to hold greater mythical fascination, such traces also develop a significance, especially when the notes are in use. Sharpness and blurredness, paint residues and fragmented details. Works of art arise through focus and magnifying image details. Here, too, inspection and counting out, newly arising spaces and colour images, digital watercolours. The artistic processes of rendering legible are the mirror of control mechanisms and neo-capitalist processes. Counting and illustrating, notations and interwoven forms. An accentuation in matrix form thus results each time: an atlas of banknotes. Stamped bills, artistically investigated and photographically translated as images, like an echo of financial movements, ironically symbolized by mechanical hand stamps and the unvarying adding-up.
The works by Maks Dannecker resemble an authentication of the only seemingly cryptic revisions. The artistic photographer scans the archives of reality like safes full of paper gold, the spatial configurations of our everyday world with deliberation. The interventions in the banknotes’ photographic illustrations create new virtual spatial worlds of concrete art.
